Exhibition INFOBALT'2006 is dedicated to ITT technologies, e-services and electronics and is the most important and biggest annual event in the field of IT in Lithuania. The seminar "PORTA OPTICA STUDY and LITNET network development perspectives" was organized during this exhibition (on 19th of October, 2006).
Representatives of the national and local government, potential network users (scientific institutions, universities) were invited. Telecommunication companies, dark fibre owners attended the seminar. Participants were introduced with Porta Optica Study project, its goals, activities and current results. LITNET network development perspectives were discussed.
Porta Optica Study workshop, addressed to user communities and policy makers from Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine, provided general information about situation of National Research and Education Networks in Eastern Europe, the recent Black Sea Initiative and Odessa-Poti undersea cable, problems related to inadequate access to high-speed networks and possible solutions of these problems. Talks were given by speakers from international organizations (DANTE, CEENet), academic networks (PIONIER, URAN, UARNet, CESNET, GRENA ) and major Ukrainian operators.
Presentations from the workshop:

One of the main mission of the International ICFA Workshop is to develop approaches to reduce or eliminate the Digital Divide in Eastern Europe, Russia, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Africa and to help ensure that the basic requirements for global collaboration are met in the field of data-intensive Grid computing, inter-regional connectivity and Grid enabled analysis for high energy physics.
At the meeting the main objectives of the Porta Optica Study project was presented for about 50 participants that represent the most important scientific ventures especially related to Grid application development in Eastern Europe.
